Electric buses are quietly changing the rhythm of the Belgian capital, and the pace is picking up. This year the city transport operator STIB-MIVB rolled 36 new battery-electric buses onto routes 47, 56, 58 and 83, part of a batch of 50 due across 2026. The operator’s electric fleet now tops 140 vehicles.

Those buses have already covered more than eight million kilometres since the electrification drive began. Every one of them retires a diesel engine on streets where air quality has long been a political sore point, and the operator plans to keep swapping combustion for battery power route by route.

The switch sits inside a far larger bet on public transport. Between 2019 and 2028 the region is pouring roughly six billion euros into modernising and extending its network, from fresh metro capacity to redesigned surface routes. STIB casts the programme as part of a wider green makeover of the city.

The spending appears to be shifting habits. A study cited by the EU’s urban mobility observatory found the share of trips taken by metro, tram and bus climbed from 22 percent in 2022 to 27 percent in 2024. In a city that hosts the EU institutions and chokes on cross-border commuter traffic, that jump carries real weight.

Digital tools are doing their part. STIB has pushed riders toward a mobile app that sells tickets, plans journeys, maps accessible routes, and pipes real-time updates to the phone. The operator wants the network to feel as simple to use as it is clean to run.

None of this comes cheap or without friction. Electric buses cost more to buy than diesel ones, depots need charging infrastructure, and roadworks tied to the metro build-out routinely irritate residents and businesses. Yet the direction of travel is clear, and the fleet numbers keep climbing.

The stakes reach beyond one city. Brussels sells itself as a showcase for European climate ambition, and a capital that cannot green its own buses would struggle to lecture anyone else. Each new vehicle on routes 47, 56, 58 and 83 turns a policy slogan into something residents can actually board.

The test now is whether the modal shift holds as the network expands and the novelty fades. If more commuters keep choosing the tram or the bus over the car, the six-billion-euro wager starts to look less like an expense and more like an investment that pays back in cleaner air and quieter streets.
