Solar Lifts EU Renewable Electricity To 54.1 percent Despite A Slip

EU renewable electricity supplied 54.1 percent of net generation in the second quarter of 2026, according to Eurostat data published on 18 September, a fraction below the 54.3 percent recorded a year earlier. The small dip hides a large change in the mix, because solar now provides 41.6 percent of renewable output, up from 37.0 percent in the second quarter of 2025, and it has become the largest single source.

The rest of the EU renewable electricity picture is more even. Wind supplied 27.7 percent of the renewable total, hydropower 22.6 percent, biomass and other renewable fuels 7.7 percent, and geothermal and other sources 0.4 percent. Solar gained about 4.6 percentage points of the renewable mix while the overall renewable share slipped 0.2 points, which suggests that wind and hydropower delivered less than a year earlier during the spring months.

Seasonality matters when reading EU renewable electricity figures. The share stood at 45.5 percent in the first quarter of 2026, so the second quarter came in 8.6 points higher as longer days lifted solar output. In the first quarter wind led the table with 44.9 percent of renewable generation, up from 42.3 percent a year before. A single quarter therefore says little about the annual trend, and analysts will wait for the third and fourth quarters before judging the year.

National gaps remain wide. Denmark reached 94.3 percent, mostly from wind, and Croatia 92.2 percent, mostly from hydropower, while Slovakia stood at 19.8 percent and Czechia at 20.9 percent. Italy, at 59.6 percent, sat slightly above the Union average and rose from 16th to 12th place in the ranking after climbing from 40.7 percent in the first quarter. The distance between the top and the bottom shows that EU renewable electricity is not one market but 27 different energy systems with different resources and histories.

The numbers matter because the Renewable Energy Directive sets a binding Union target of at least 42.5 percent renewables in final energy consumption by 2030. Electricity leads that effort, since it is the sector where wind, solar and hydropower can be deployed fastest, yet a quarterly share of net generation is a different measure from the target. Eurostat figures should be read as a progress signal rather than a compliance check.

Solar’s rise also brings a practical challenge for EU renewable electricity. Output peaks around midday and in summer, which strains grids, depresses wholesale prices in sunny hours and raises the value of storage and flexible demand. Countries with little hydropower or wind to balance the system, such as those at the bottom of the table, will feel that pressure first.

The second quarter of 2026 therefore tells a story of rebalancing rather than decline. EU renewable electricity held steady at about 54 percent while solar took over the lead, and the next Eurostat releases will show whether that new mix can raise the overall share toward the 2030 goals.
