Belgium And Ireland Drag Euro Area Industrial Production Down 0.5%

Luxembourg: Euro area industrial production fell 0.5% in August 2026 from July, Eurostat reported on 15 October, while the EU as a whole recorded a 0.3% decline. Belgium and Ireland pulled the euro area figure down most, though the result also reflects a weak consumer goods sector.

Compared with August 2025, euro area industrial production stood 1.1% lower. Eurostat also revised July down to a fall of 0.3% from 0.1%, and the annual rate for July to minus 0.3% from zero, which means the slowdown began earlier than first reported. The figures are calendar and seasonally adjusted first estimates.

The main industrial groupings moved in different directions. Intermediate goods fell 0.8% on the month and 0.4% on the year, and energy declined 0.6% on the month while rising 3.1% compared with a year earlier. Capital goods grew 0.4% on the month and 3.0% on the year, and durable consumer goods added 0.2% and 0.4%. Non-durable consumer goods dropped 2.7% on the month and 9.1% on the year, the steepest fall of any group.

Country figures show where the damage to euro area industrial production sits. Belgium lost 5.1% on the month and 7.1% on the year, and Ireland shed 3.1% on the month and 15.0% on the year, the sharpest annual fall in the area. Portugal fell 2.0% on the month, Italy 1.3% and Finland 1.2%. Luxembourg also finished 5.3% below August 2025.

Several members moved the other way. Estonia rose 4.3% on the month, the Netherlands 2.6%, Luxembourg 2.5% and Greece 2.4%, and the Netherlands stood 9.8% above a year earlier. Germany edged up 0.4% on the month and on the year, while France slipped 0.3% on the month and gained 0.4% on the year. Spain declined 0.8% on the month but remained 1.2% higher on the year.

The timing adds to the policy debate over competitiveness. Euro area annual inflation climbed to 3.8% in September, according to Eurostat, so manufacturers face higher energy costs and weaker output at once. Eurostat’s figures also leave room for caution, because euro area industrial production in smaller economies such as Ireland often swings widely from month to month, and one weak reading does not prove a lasting downturn. Capital goods are the one bright spot, and sustained growth there would signal that firms still invest. The next Eurostat release will add another data point, and several members will need to show a rebound. Until then, euro area industrial production will remain a key test of whether Europe’s factories can absorb the energy shock.
