Heidelberg: The European Research Council has thrown open its 2026 Advanced Grant competition, the part of the EU science budget reserved for established researchers with a track record and an appetite for risk, and the numbers around it capture a system trying to do more ambitious work with money that is no longer growing. Each Advanced Grant runs to around three million euros over five years, and the council expects to fund roughly 294 of them from a pot of about 747 million, one slice of an overall 2026 budget near 2.7 billion euros that also covers Starting, Consolidator, Synergy and Proof-of-Concept awards.
The council occupies an unusual place in European research policy. Unlike most EU funding it does not chase predefined themes, industrial priorities or geographic balance; it backs individual investigators pursuing curiosity-driven, frontier projects judged on scientific excellence alone. That purity is the source of its prestige and, periodically, of political friction, because excellence-only funding tends to concentrate awards in a handful of research-heavy countries and institutions, a pattern poorer member states have long resented.
This year’s competition arrives with a redesigned work programme. The council has altered the structure of proposals, tightened the rules on resubmitting rejected applications, adjusted how the eligibility window can be extended for career breaks, and added relocation funding intended to lure or keep top researchers inside the European Union. That last provision is not incidental. With research funding under strain in some other parts of the world and academic mobility increasingly politicised, European officials see an opening to attract scientists who might once have gravitated elsewhere, and the relocation money is a deliberate piece of that pitch.
The larger anxiety hanging over the call is what comes after 2027. Horizon Europe, the current research framework, runs out at the end of that year, and the Commission has floated a successor, provisionally the tenth framework programme, with talk of a budget around 175 billion euros from 2028. The figure is contested, the design unsettled, and the research community is watching closely for signs that frontier science could be squeezed by pressure to tie funding more directly to competitiveness, defence and industrial strategy. Universities fear a future in which money flows chiefly to projects with a near-term economic payoff, leaving the open-ended inquiry the council was built to protect fighting for a shrinking share.
For the principal investigators now drafting applications, those debates are background noise to a brutally practical calculation. Success rates for the most coveted grants hover in the low double digits, meaning the overwhelming majority of strong proposals will be turned away, and the tightened resubmission rules raise the stakes of a rejection. A funded Advanced Grant buys something rare: years of stable support, a team, and the freedom to chase a difficult idea without quarterly justification. The competition to secure one has rarely been fiercer, and the sense that the overall pool may not keep pace with Europe’s research ambitions only sharpens it. The applications close later in the cycle; the verdict on whether Europe is still a place where frontier science can be funded at scale will take longer to deliver.
