Right To Repair Directive Deadline Passed In July With Status Unclear

Porto: The right to repair directive reached its transposition deadline on 31 July 2026, and consumers now ask what has changed in shops and workshops. Directive (EU) 2024/1799 obliges member states to write new repair duties into national law, yet the reports reviewed for this article do not confirm which countries have finished the job.

A legal analysis by Abreu Advogados, republished on 13 March 2026, explains the core duty. Manufacturers must repair certain goods at the consumer’s request, covering products with ecodesign repairability requirements such as household appliances and electronic equipment. Repair is free while the legal guarantee runs, and afterwards the manufacturer may charge a reasonable price. The work must be done within a reasonable time from the moment the manufacturer has physical possession of the goods.

Non-EU makers cannot escape the rule. If a producer sits outside the Union, the obligation falls first on its authorised representative, then on the importer, and finally on the distributor. The right to repair directive also prohibits contract terms, hardware techniques or software locks that prevent repair, unless objectively justified, and it requires that independent repairers get spare parts without unjustified barriers.

Consumers gain a further incentive. If a buyer chooses repair instead of replacement during the original guarantee, the legal guarantee is extended by 12 months. That feature is meant to remove the habit of replacing goods that could be fixed. Member states must also name contact points and adopt at least one measure that promotes repair, such as tax incentives, subsidies, awareness campaigns or support for community repair projects.

A European Online Repair Platform is due by 31 July 2027. It would let people find repairers, sellers of refurbished goods and community initiatives across the Union. I could not verify the status of national laws, and the analysis I read focuses on Portugal, so businesses should check the text in each country where they sell.

The directive sits within a broader consumer agenda. The Commission presented its 2030 Consumer Agenda in November 2025 and planned a Digital Fairness Act proposal for the fourth quarter of 2026, aimed at dark patterns, addictive design and unfair personalisation. The right to repair directive therefore forms one part of a larger shift toward longer product life.

Retailers, manufacturers and repair shops should now look for national transposition laws and for guidance on pricing after the guarantee ends. The right to repair directive will prove its worth when a broken washing machine is mended instead of scrapped.
