French Farm Diesel Aid Doubles To 424 Million Euros Under METSAF

Rennes: French farm diesel aid has doubled to 424 million euros after the European Commission approved an amendment to a national State aid scheme on 30 October 2026. The scheme supports agricultural and aquaculture companies that face higher fuel costs because of the crisis in the Middle East, and it now covers a longer period of purchases.

France first received approval for the measure on 22 June 2026, with a budget of 212 million euros. Paris then notified a further 212 million euros, and the Commission accepted the extension in case SA.124997. The additional money also stretches eligibility from fuel bought between May and August 2026 to purchases made between September and December 2026.

The aid offsets part of the cost of non-road diesel, known in France as gazole non routier, which tractors, harvesters and fishing and aquaculture equipment burn. Beneficiaries are firms in the primary production of agricultural and aquaculture products. The Commission page does not publish per-company aid levels or the application procedure, so farmers will need to follow guidance from the French authorities.

The legal basis is the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework, known as METSAF, which the Commission adopted on 29 April 2026. The decision also relies on Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, together with Sections 1 and 2.1 of the framework. Those provisions let member states compensate firms for crisis-related costs without breaking competition rules.

The Commission concluded that French farm diesel aid is necessary, appropriate and proportionate. It found a clear estimated budget and no undue distortion of trading conditions in the single market. Those tests matter in agriculture, where subsidies in one country can quickly affect prices and competitiveness in another.

The decision shows how long energy costs have weighed on food production. A scheme first designed for the summer now runs to the end of the year, which suggests that higher diesel prices have not faded as quickly as ministers hoped. Farm groups in other member states may now ask their own governments for similar support under METSAF.

Producers on the ground say the support arrives at a sensitive moment for margins. Winter field work, harvesting and fishing trips all burn fuel, and French farm diesel aid helps spread that burden over the months when operating costs normally peak, which could ease pressure on food prices later. Other capitals will study French farm diesel aid as a model.

Next, the Commission will publish non-confidential versions of the decision in the State aid register once confidentiality questions are settled. Observers will then see the full conditions that apply to the scheme. For French growers and aquaculture producers, however, the essential message is already clear, because French farm diesel aid will keep flowing until the end of December 2026.
