Twenty New European Universities Alliances Win Bridge Funding

Bologna: The European Universities alliances selected under the 2026 Erasmus+ call are starting their funded activities this autumn and winter, after the Commission published the results on 9 July 2026. Twenty alliances won support, which brings the number backed by the initiative to 65, and the selection covers 190 higher education institutions.

Money explains the timing. The call carried a total budget of €145.6 million, and each alliance can receive up to €7.2 million in bridge funding over two years. By my calculation twenty awards at that ceiling come to €144 million, close to the full call budget. The Commission page also says one earlier Seal of Excellence holder receives funding, and it does not explain how that award fits the total.

The funding is explicitly a bridge. Its purpose is to keep European Universities alliances running until the next multiannual financial framework starts, so the 2028-2034 budget negotiations will decide what comes after. The call opened on 18 November 2025 and welcomed alliances that the 2022 call had funded as well as new applicants. Institutions from the Western Balkans could take part as beneficiaries.

The Seal of Excellence rewards proposals that score above 80 points but cannot be financed for lack of budget. It signals that a project met the quality bar even though the call could not pay for it. The selected list of European Universities alliances includes familiar names such as 4EU+, Arqus, CIVICA, Unite! and YUFE.

Geography looks broad. The Commission page does not state how many countries the European Universities alliances span, but my count from the country codes in the published lists reaches 27, including Norway and Serbia as well as most member states. Broad membership is part of the argument for the initiative, which aims at deep cooperation on joint degrees, shared campuses and student mobility across borders.

The pages I reviewed name no officials and give no quotes, and they do not report a submission deadline, although the Commission updated its results page on 16 July 2026. They also leave open how alliances will fund long-term plans if the next framework is delayed. Two-year awards leave little room to promise students multi-year joint programmes.

For rectors and students the next months are practical. Alliances must hire staff, launch joint courses and show results quickly. How well the European Universities alliances use their bridge funding will shape the case for a larger and longer commitment in the budget that starts in 2028.
