Unemployment Rate Holds At 6.2 Percent As Finland Tops The EU

Luxembourg: The EU unemployment rate stood at 6.2 percent in September 2026, unchanged from August but above the 6.0 percent recorded a year earlier, according to Eurostat figures reported by Staffing Industry Analysts on 2 November 2026. In the euro area, the rate was 6.5 percent, also stable on the month and up from 6.3 percent in September 2025.

The number of jobless people shows a gentler picture of strain than the headline rate suggests. Eurostat counted 13.773 million unemployed people in the Union, which is 471,000 more than a year earlier and 105,000 more than in August. In the euro area the figure was 11.555 million, up 420,000 on the year and up 122,000 on the month. A stable unemployment rate alongside a monthly rise in headcount suggests that the labour force itself keeps growing.

National gaps remain wide. Finland recorded the highest unemployment rate at 10.5 percent, which is 0.5 percentage points above its level a year earlier. Malta and Poland tied for the lowest at 3.4 percent. Malta’s rate rose from 2.7 percent a year earlier, while Poland’s moved up from 3.3 percent. The spread of seven percentage points between Helsinki and Valletta shows how unevenly the Union’s labour markets recover.

Gender and age patterns matter as well. In the EU, the unemployment rate for women was 6.4 percent, up from 6.2 percent a year earlier, and the rate for men was 6.0 percent, up from 5.8 percent. Among people under 25, 3.022 million were unemployed in the Union, including 2.469 million in the euro area. The youth jobless rate reached 15.5 percent in the EU and 15.4 percent in the euro area, both slightly above the levels of September 2025.

I could not open the Eurostat release itself, so every figure here comes from the trade report that cites it, and readers should check the original tables before they rely on them. The report does not explain the causes of the rise or give forecasts, and it names no officials, so readers get the numbers without any official reading of what is driving them or what governments plan to do about them.

The next signals come from the October release and from the fourth-quarter growth estimates. If the unemployment rate keeps edging up while hiring slows and joblessness spreads, governments will face pressure to support younger workers and the countries with the weakest labour markets. A fall in the unemployment rate would show that the September plateau marked a pause, not the start of a longer rise.
