Oral GLP-1 Pill Gets EMA Backing Alongside Pancreatic Cancer Drug

Amsterdam: The first oral GLP-1 pill for weight management and type 2 diabetes won a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency in October 2026. The agency’s human medicines committee, the CHMP, met from 12 to 15 October and recommended six new medicines, including Foundayo, which contains orforglipron, according to a machine-generated English summary on the Lovguiden news site.

Foundayo is a once-daily tablet for adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related health problem, and for adults with type 2 diabetes. In two weight studies with 4,740 adults, the oral GLP-1 pill produced weight loss of about 5 to 11 percent at 72 weeks, depending on dose, against about 2 to 2.5 percent with placebo. Four diabetes studies with 3,765 adults showed a fall in HbA1c of 1.2 to 1.9 percentage points. The most common side effects were nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, especially while doses increase.

The committee also backed Rasonque, which contains daraxonrasib, for adults with metastatic pancreatic cancer who have already received treatment. In a phase 3 study of 500 patients, median overall survival reached 12.4 months compared with 6.7 months with chemotherapy. Time without disease worsening was 7.2 months against 3.6 months. Reviewers assessed it under the EMA Cancer Medicines Pathfinder in under 150 days.

The other recommendations covered Yuviwel for achondroplasia in children, two biosimilars named Fovlussea and Neuzafy, and Kizfizo for brain tumours. The meeting also recommended five extensions of indication, and it confirmed a refusal for Yartemlea after re-examination. The CHMP did not recommend Mylotarg for children with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia, because the main study of 515 children showed no better event-free survival. It recommended that the nasal spray Nyxoid move to sale without a prescription.

A positive opinion is not yet an authorisation. The European Commission takes the final decision, and the summary says it will fast-track Rasonque, but it gives no general timeline and no date for the oral GLP-1 pill. Price and reimbursement stay with each member state, so patients may wait longer for access than for approval. I did not check the figures against the EMA’s own pages.

Health ministers and insurers will now weigh the cost of the first oral GLP-1 pill against injectable rivals. The next markers for the oral GLP-1 pill are the Commission’s decision, national pricing talks and early safety reports once patients start treatment. Those steps will show whether a tablet widens access to obesity treatment or mainly adds a convenient option for patients who already receive care.
