Euro Area Inflation Hits 3.8 Percent As Energy Prices Jump 18.8

Vilnius: Euro area inflation rose to 3.8% in September 2026, according to Eurostat’s flash estimate published on 2 October, up from 3.2% in August and 2.9% in July. The 0.6 percentage point jump is the biggest step among the monthly readings since April and leaves consumer prices rising far above the European Central Bank’s 2% target.

Energy did most of the damage. The annual energy rate climbed from 14.3% in August to 18.8% in September, with energy prices up 3.9% on the month alone. A year earlier, energy prices were falling by 0.4%. Energy carries a weight of about 9% in the basket, yet its swing explains why euro area inflation moved so sharply while other components barely changed.

Beneath the headline, euro area inflation looks calmer once energy is removed. Services inflation edged up from 3.0% to 3.2%, and food, alcohol and tobacco moved from 1.1% to 1.4%. Within that group, unprocessed food accelerated from 2.7% to 4.0%, while processed food, alcohol and tobacco slipped from 0.5% to 0.4%. Non-energy industrial goods eased from 1.2% to 1.1%. Core measures rose only modestly: inflation excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco reached 2.5%, against 2.4% in August, and inflation excluding energy alone rose from 2.1% to 2.3%.

The national picture of euro area inflation is wide, and the gaps between capitals are large. Lithuania recorded the highest rate at 6.1%, while Malta had the lowest at 2.4%. Spain stood at 5.0%, Greece jumped from 3.7% to 5.1%, and Italy rose from 3.2% to 4.1%, with a monthly increase of 2.0% that was the largest in the euro area. France reached 3.4% even though its prices fell 0.4% on the month, and Germany came in at 3.3%. Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026, so this year’s aggregates cover 21 member states instead of the 20 that shared the currency before. That enlargement changes the base of every comparison with 2025, which is worth remembering when reading the year-on-year figures.

The political reaction has begun. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asking for additional fiscal flexibility to support households and businesses facing higher energy bills. The Commission replied that it would keep the letter under review and noted that it had already put flexibility measures in place.

The flash figure is preliminary, and Eurostat’s detailed breakdown may shift individual rates. Households will not wait for the final numbers, however, because grocery and energy bills show the direction every week. The direction is clear. With energy running at 18.8% and unprocessed food accelerating, euro area inflation has become a test of how far governments can cushion households without reigniting price pressures that central bankers are trying to contain.
