Toulouse: Europe’s bid to own its satellite communications network is holding to schedule, according to one of the industrial giants building it. The chief executive of Thales confirmed in late July that work on IRIS2, the EU’s secure connectivity constellation, is progressing as planned, a reassurance that matters for a programme meant to anchor the bloc’s digital sovereignty in orbit.
IRIS2, short for Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite, is the EU’s third space flagship after the Galileo navigation system and the Copernicus earth-observation fleet. It will string together roughly 290 satellites across medium and low earth orbits, a multi-orbit design meant to deliver both resilience and speed.
The purpose is strategic before it is commercial. The constellation is built to safeguard government, military and critical-infrastructure communications with a sovereign network that does not depend on foreign operators. Alongside that secure core, it promises broadband to public authorities, businesses and citizens, and a way to close the connectivity dead zones that still cut off parts of the continent.
The Commission signed the concession contract with the SpaceRISE consortium, the group of operators charged with developing, deploying and running the system. Bringing Thales and its peers into a single partnership spreads both the technical burden and the financial risk of a project whose price runs into the billions. The funding mixes EU money with private investment, an arrangement that ties the constellation’s fortunes to the willingness of industry to stay the course as costs mount.
Sovereignty is the word that recurs whenever officials describe the venture. As commercial mega-constellations expand and geopolitical tension makes reliance on any single provider look risky, the EU wants a network it controls outright. IRIS2 answers the awkward position of a bloc that champions strategic autonomy yet leans on satellites owned elsewhere.
Ambition on this scale invites hard questions about cost and timing. Building and launching hundreds of satellites across two orbital bands is a formidable undertaking, and the programme must reach service without the delays and overruns that have dogged other large space efforts. A public confirmation from a lead contractor that the schedule holds is therefore more than corporate housekeeping.
Full deployment still lies years ahead, and the constellation will prove itself only once its satellites fly and its secure links carry real traffic. For now, the message from industry is that the timetable stands. For a European Union determined to place its most sensitive communications beyond the reach of others, staying on track is the whole point.
