Esbjerg: From the quays of this Danish port, where towers and blades are loaded onto specialised ships bound for wind farms across the world, a quieter European success story sets sail. New figures from the bloc’s statistical office show that exports of wind turbines from the Union reached roughly ten and a half billion euros in 2024, a reminder that for all the anxiety about Europe losing the clean-technology race, there are corners of the industry where the continent still ships its hardware abroad in volume.
The number, published this week as part of a steady stream of trade releases, lands amid a debate that has grown gloomier by the month. European policymakers fret openly about Chinese dominance in solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles, and about the risk that the same fate awaits wind power. The export data complicate that pessimism without erasing it. They show an industry that, at least in 2024, remained a net seller to the rest of the world, exporting machines and components built on decades of engineering expertise concentrated in countries such as Denmark, Germany and Spain.
Statistics of this kind reward careful reading. A single year’s export value captures orders placed and shipped, not the health of order books still being negotiated, and the wind sector is notoriously lumpy, with large projects swinging the figures from one period to the next. The headline also folds together very different products, from the towering nacelles that house a turbine’s generator to the smaller components that feed global supply chains. What it does establish is that European manufacturers retained a meaningful share of international demand even as competitors abroad scaled up aggressively and undercut them on price.
The same statistical office has been releasing a clutch of related trade snapshots, and together they sketch the texture of the Union’s external commerce: the share of firms that both import and export, the rise and fall of niche product categories, the shifting balance with major partners. Each release is modest on its own. Read in sequence, they form the evidence base on which industrial policy is supposed to rest, allowing officials to distinguish between sectors that are genuinely slipping and those, like turbine exports, that are quietly holding their ground.
For the wind industry, the figure is cold comfort against structural worries. Manufacturers have spent recent years squeezed between rising input costs, planning delays and fierce price competition, and several have warned that without firmer European demand and faster permitting they cannot sustain their factories. A strong export tally does not resolve those pressures; if anything it underlines how dependent the sector has become on overseas customers while its home market stutters. The lesson many in the industry draw is that Europe must convert its engineering lead into installations at home before rivals erode the advantage that the export data still reflect.
There is a broader point in the numbers, too. The clean-technology contest is often framed as a single race that Europe is either winning or losing, when the reality is a mosaic of sectors moving at different speeds. The bloc may be trailing badly in solar and scrambling in batteries while still exporting wind turbines at scale. Honest industrial strategy depends on telling those stories apart, and that is precisely what the unglamorous work of the statisticians, one trade release at a time, makes possible.
