Parma: Most of the food on European plates carries little or no trace of the chemicals used to grow it. The European Food Safety Authority’s latest annual audit of pesticide residues found that the overwhelming majority of samples met legal limits, a reassuring headline that the agency pairs with a sharper focus on the outliers.
The authority analysed tens of thousands of samples gathered across the EU, Iceland and Norway. It reported that nearly 60 percent of samples contained no measurable pesticide residues at all, while another large share held residues that fell within the maximum limits the law allows. Only a small fraction breached those thresholds, and a still smaller slice counted as legally non-compliant once measurement uncertainty was taken into account.
Those numbers matter because they anchor a system that most shoppers never see. Maximum residue levels set the ceiling for how much of a given pesticide may legally remain on a carrot, an apple or a bag of rice, and national laboratories test against them year after year. The EFSA residue report turns that routine surveillance into a continent-wide scorecard.
The picture is not uniform. Residues showed up more often in certain imported crops and in a handful of products where specific substances repeatedly nudged past their limits, prompting the agency to flag them for closer monitoring and, where needed, tighter import controls. EFSA scientists also fed the data into a dietary risk assessment, concluding that the residues found were unlikely to pose a concern for consumer health at the levels detected.
Running alongside the annual report, the authority continues to reassess individual substances as new evidence arrives. Its recent peer review of the acaricide bifenazate, prompted by fresh data on possible endocrine effects, shows how a single active ingredient can be pulled back onto the bench even after years on the market. Campaigners caution against reading the top-line figures as an all-clear. They point to the cumulative effect of exposure to several pesticides at once, a question science is still working to pin down, and to residues in specific foods that children eat in quantity. EFSA acknowledges the cocktail question and has been building models to assess combined exposure rather than judging each chemical in isolation.
For farmers, the results reinforce a message that the market already sends: buyers and regulators expect clean produce, and the tools to deliver it, from integrated pest management to careful timing of sprays, are increasingly a condition of doing business. For the food-safety system as a whole, the report is a yearly reminder that vigilance, not complacency, keeps the pesticide residues story a quiet one.
