Prague: Europe’s satellite navigation system has quietly hit a milestone that hundreds of millions of people rely on without ever noticing. A newly commissioned spacecraft has entered service, completing the deployment of the latest batch of satellites in the Galileo constellation and reinforcing the network that underpins everything from smartphone maps to precision farming and aircraft approaches.
Galileo is the civilian-controlled positioning system the European Union built to end its dependence on the American GPS and other foreign networks. Managed on the ground by the EU Agency for the Space Programme, based in Prague, it now delivers positioning to a user base numbering in the billions of devices, and its accuracy for authenticated, high-precision use has become a selling point for industries that cannot tolerate a spoofed or degraded signal.
Bringing an additional satellite into active service does more than add a dot in the sky. Every extra spacecraft improves the geometry available to a receiver, which sharpens accuracy and, just as importantly, builds resilience. A constellation with spare capacity can lose a unit to a fault or ageing hardware and keep performing, and robustness is the quality operators prize most as navigation signals become critical infrastructure.
The bigger story sits one generation ahead. Work on the second generation of Galileo satellites is advancing, with components built and tested and now being assembled into the spacecraft that will fly in the coming years. These successors promise more powerful signals, reconfigurable payloads and stronger defences against jamming and spoofing, threats that have moved from theoretical to routine in contested regions.
Getting them to orbit is its own challenge. The programme’s agency has signed a fresh launch contract for the next pair of second-generation satellites aboard Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket, part of a deliberate push to restore autonomous access to space after years in which the bloc leaned on foreign launchers. For a project whose entire rationale is strategic independence, launching on a European vehicle is not a detail but the point.
The economics rarely make headlines, yet they are substantial. Independent estimates credit satellite navigation with underwriting a large slice of European economic activity, because so many services silently assume a free, reliable positioning and timing signal. Financial trading, power grids and mobile networks all lean on the precise timing that systems like Galileo broadcast, which is why continuity of service is treated as a security matter rather than a convenience.
